How We Test

Our testing translates real homes into measurable scenarios, then scores each gate with our Fit & Flow method. We evaluate the four pillars with scenario-specific weightings (e.g., Flow and trip risk are weighted highest at top-of-stairs; Finish may be weighted higher for room separation).

Fit (Space Compatibility & Hardware) • Opening widths and extension coverage, measured with templates and calipers. • Baseboard depth and mounting clearance tests, with spacers and wall protectors. • Banister-only installs using clamps/adapters—round, square, and tapered profiles. • Stair positions (top vs. bottom), landing size, stud presence, and wall material. • Flex and racking resistance under push/pull loads within safe, non-destructive limits.

Flow (Daily Use & Safety) • One-hand open/close, latch force, and ergonomics. • Swing direction control, auto-close reliability (cycle-tested), and hold-open features. • Threshold height and trip risk; noise/rattle during operation (quiet for naps/overnight). • Pet coexistence: cat pass-through options, dog containment, and bar spacing.

Finish (Materials & Décor Fit) • Build quality, welds/joins, coatings/paint durability, and color/wood-match options. • Corrosion checks for outdoor-rated models (salt-mist exposure where applicable).

Future-proof (Adaptability) • Extension availability and stability; compatibility matrices by model/version. • Quick-release options, reconfiguration ease, and spare-parts support.

Process & Tools • We follow manufacturer instructions and safety guidance (e.g., hardware-mount at top-of-stairs). • Measurements use rigid rulers, calipers, angle finders, and printed templates (validated to scale). • Installs are repeated across multiple substrates and banister types for consistency. • Each gate’s score includes notes on required adapters/spacers, with links to exact parts.

Ratings & Updates • Scores roll up by use case (top-of-stairs, wide openings, extra tall, pets, retractable, outdoor). • We re-test on product revisions, and we monitor reader feedback for durability or alignment issues. • If a gate is discontinued or changes specs, we update or replace our recommendations promptly.

Safety Note We do not provide medical advice. Always follow local codes and manufacturer instructions. For stair installs, use approved hardware-mount gates only and confirm secure, aligned mounting before use.
